-not be given in these pages, but must come from the source whence comes all truth—the spirit within every man. We can but start minds to thinking, and thus open the door, as it were, so that the light within can pour through and illumine the ideas placed in them.

-In our first editorial the reader was informed that this Magazine is a herald of the New Dispensation fast approaching, and that it will deal especially with subjects concerning that Era and with those factors working both in the inner and outer worlds to bring it to pass.+<WRAP justify>
+every line was speeded up to unprecedented heights and toward a goal where all manpower could be released for war service. It was evident to a few engineers at that time that the type of high-powered equipment which they were installing would be far-reaching in its effect on our social structure, and that the successful operation of this equipment would require a new type of social control which would be endemic to the nature of the equipment that was being placed in use. They saw with mathematical clarity that up until 1830 our rate of using energy in production had not really passed the speed of an ox-cart, but that we were since then in the process of attaining the speed of the airplane.”

-To that end we take pleasure in pointing you to two articles by Wayne W. Parrish, one in the November and the other in the December number of The New Outlook, on “Technocracy,” a new science that is being much discussed privately and publicly these days by students and thinkers in this country. Its conclusions are of such vital importance that we will quote rather fully from the articles to emphasize what we wish our readers carefully to consider. The italics are ours, to call special attention to the thoughts expressed.+“We must realize, Technocracy tells us, that we have reached the end of an era, that the fundamental cause of the depression is not political, it is technological. On this fact is predicated the necessity of appreciating that the only solution to our difficulties is a new era of technology where man can master the gigantic machine which has brought us to the close of the most fantastic period in the history of our small world. It is not a matter of choice. The old omnibus in which we have been riding has been patched up until its use as a vehicle is almost over.”

-Technocracy, as used in what follows, is the name given to the art or science of developing machinery to do the work of men. Technocracy is a new word, and as adapted seems to be a study of the results of the perfecting of machinery to replace man-power, and of what the outcome will be. At present it is the result of the efforts of a group of engineers and scientists conducting their research in the department of industrial engineering at Columbia University, and who are “engaged in the most extensive analysis of our industrial and agricultural growth ever attempted.”+You will note that Technocracy definitely states we are now at the end of an era. Hear this:

-“Technocracy has its foundations in an extension of physics conceived shortly after the World War, when production in +“The social system on this continent is being forced into a revision and revaluation of all its standards of value. The standards of the price system have been found wanting and an entirely new set of standards must be erected in order to deal with the physical conditions that have arrived by virtue of this hodge-podge created by the impact of technology on an old and outmoded social technique. America is witnessing the passing of the price system of production. We are faced with the problem of having to desert a system that has become obsolete and at the same time of designing a system to take its place.”

-{{ :2-11.jpg?|}}+What is meant by a price system? It is any system that uses a medium of exchange, in other words money, as a method of valuation of all commodities.

+“No social state of history has operated on other than a price system, present day Russia being no exception.”
