 +IT WAS now seventy-two hours since they had entered the room. It was one of those awful sessions of just sitting and waiting. Each one waiting for the same thing. Each one hoping that it would not happen. To them, Death was hovering over the one who lay there before them. A beckoning spectre possessed unknown powers.

 +Peter Borne, the one whom they watched, was father and husband to them. He had lived a hard life, fighting all the way with an undying determination to gain his proper position in the profession of his choice—law. He had surrounded himself with a great organization of research workers and clerks. They were able at a moment’s notice to give any information he desired. They knew where it was to be found. Thus Peter Borne’s career had been a brilliant one, covering some of the most spectacular cases and decisions in the whole country.

 +But this was quite different. Now he lay in a bed, with doctor, nurse, wife and sons about him, waiting for Death to arrive. He was not frightened. Nothing frightened Peter Borne, yet he had frightened many a man in his line of duty. He knew the fallacy of fright and recognized the value of it as a weapon. No, it was not fright that bothered him, but this was the first time that he could not call on his staff for information. He was facing something he knew nothing about.

 +As he lay there in a semi-conscious state, he would often wish that they would all leave him alone. Their presence seemed to crowd him. Fleeting thoughts raced through his mind and through it all there seemed to be someone or something calling—or perhaps he was calling. He could not tell. Sometimes the people sitting there became blurred masses. Sometimes he could recognize Emma, his wife.

 +Emma was worn out. She had slept a few minutes at a time in the chair beside the bed. She had eaten but meals there. The boys had also been there constantly. Peter Jr., the eldest and his brother Bob, were two grand, healthy boys. They had watched their father grow from a strained financial condition to prosperity,
