| + | === CARRYING OUR CROSSES === | ||
| + | </ | ||
| + | |||
| + | I DREAMED I was in a large dance hall. I danced with a very handsome Mexican man. His name was Jose—he won a prize. | ||
| + | |||
| + | I fell in love with this man. He took me away to a great barn, the inside of which was like a church. In the church were two altars at each end. One altar was beautiful, a figure was kneeling before it as we went in. (I seemed to know who it was.) But the other altar was very crudely built. It had an oddly shaped wooden cross. The top was very unusual. | ||
| + | |||
| + | I took off the jewelry thinking Jose would know that I was not a dance hall woman. Jose and I knelt before this cross. (I wondered why we did not go to the other end at the beautiful altar.) He touched his hands to the cross and then to his feet. | ||
| + | |||
| + | I was very shocked and said to him, “Jose, I do not understand your custom, I do not worship in that manner.” He turned to me in a brutal way, and seized my feet. He said, “You have no crosses on your feet. Here I will make them,” and he drew a knife and started to carve crosses on the soles of my feet. | ||
| + | |||
| + | I screamed and the figure at the High altar came and stood by me and said, “Jose, do not touch her feet, she does not worship as you do.” | ||
| + | |||
| + | Jose dropped my feet and said, “Come and dance with me again.” And I lay at his feet and cried out: “No! No! Jose, I can never dance again.” (As I said this I started to cry and yet a great peace came over me.) The figure put its arms about me and Jose went away saying, “There are other women who will.” | ||

| + | Interpretation: | ||
| + | |||
| + | But why the crosses on Jose’ feet? I have always thought any sign of the cross was good, and yet to have my feet touched by this cross filled me with disgust. Perhaps you can explain this? All the while I was in love with this Jose I wanted to impress him that I was good not evil, and he did not seem to put any value on me at all. | ||
