I HAD long known, with the brain mind, many great spiritual truths; had read and studied, but my Soul seemed bound, engulfed in sorrow, despondency and a sense of gloom that darkened the universe for me. Then a friend gave me a little book, The Impersonal Life, and the darkness began to dissolve. Then the Impersonal Lessons were asked for, and brought a dawning light—a light that has grown more clear with each succeeding Lesson. But there were certain matters which troubled me; they were selfish thoughts which refused to obey the command, “BE STILL.”

One day the garden had to be weeded, and as I worked, uprooting the useless weeds, the thought came that these weeds are like unto those stubborn self-thoughts. So after that, as I pulled each weed out of the soil of the garden, one of those stubborn selfish thoughts also was uprooted and cast aside.

That same evening during meditation, I became aware that I was looking into a garden in which the soil, freshly turned, was ready for planting. I was made to realize that this was the garden my Soul that I had prepared by thus pulling from its soil all of those obnoxious thought-weeds which so long had troubled me. The next meditation hour showed tender green breaking the ground in ordered rows. Once a spray of forget-me-nots was clearly seen. Later the garden bloomed with countless varieties of blue flowers. Still later yellow and pink blossoms appeared in abundance. These were shown me to be the ordered thoughts, words and acts of kindness, gentleness, patience and love, which I had been lately trying to express to those about me.

During each evening’s meditation and prayer, I asked that my Soul might be instructed while my brain mind
