====== The Inner Life ====== == THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | MARCH 1935 == ---- it to our readers—not to speak of quoting from it—because of its containing such stories, despite the many great truths in it. We wonder how our friend would have the millions of readers of the Bible attain the necessary discrimination for its proper understanding, and before attaining it would prevent their growing disgusted and turning it up, because of the things in it they refuse to accept and therefore to believe anything in it. In the first place we have a higher estimate and understanding of our readers than evidently has our friend, and we do not believe they so easily “swallow a lot of falsehood” should any such accompany the “good ethical teachings in the Bible or in the books in question. If the first rule of progress is devotion to truth, then surely the effect of the ethical teachings is likely to be felt, the discordant vibration of falsehood or error be quickly detected, causing the reader to pause and consider the inharmony between the differing vibrations of truth and error felt and to determine their cause. If both be accepted as truth because the former is felt to be so, or if both are rejected because of the error detected, one naturally has to learn from such lack of discrimination the lessons such experience is intended to teach. How else is one to learn discrimination? Our friend, like many other well-meaning critics, seems to leave out of consideration the great fact that within and back of each human soul there is a Higher Intelligence that is responsible for and is putting the outer man through every experience of life that will enable it to teach the mind just what is and what is not truth. The most effective way, until man has learned to listen to the Inner Voice, is through teaching it what error is not and cannot bring—harmony and satisfaction. So in time the mind learns to listen and to obey that Voice and thereby to be taught truth direct and thus gain discrimination. And Jesus, our great Teacher came here expressly to prepare us how to be, thus taught. His sermon on the Mount was devoted to that end, and He summed it all up in those meaningful words, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things else shall be added.” And then to His loved disciples, in more intimate and definite words, just before He was leaving them and after telling them all about the Comforter, the Holy Ghost, this Higher Intelligence within, and how to wait upon and serve {{ :3503-11.jpg |}} ---- //⥳ [[editorial_mar35_2|previous page]] // | // [[editorial_mar35_4|next page]] ⥴ //
