STANDING with folded wings of mystery—folded wings of uncertainty—folded wings of possibility, this New Year waits to greet us, you and me.

We have laid aside the volume of 1935. We opened it with so much joyful expectancy, quite unable to guess all that the pages would reveal to us; and as we turned them one by one, read and re-read them, what did we find written thereon?

We found the mystery of unexpected sorrow, of contacts which tortured and seared out hearts, of betrayals, falsehood, deceit—mysteries! Yes, the mysteries of the frailties of human nature.

We also found, written on many, Oh so many pages, the benumbing poison of uncertainty, pages (or days) over which we lingered, reading them again and again, not knowing what was best to do; until wearied and perplexed, we turned the page over, to find, written on the other silent words which pointed to us The Way.

And as we read on and on, we came across the mystery of possibility. Hereon were written the counsel contained in the Laws of Life,—mysteries indeed! Our joyful expectancy was changed to interrogatory wondering.

Were these “mysteries” all that the New Year had for us? Page after page was slowly turned; true, all of them were not filled with that which seemed so hard to understand. But as we turned them, some were bare, blank sheets, on which we could write fair and loving thoughts; others were blurred and stained by fallen tears; and again we find some with names erased, and lines left out, pages torn and blotted.

But scattered here among all of these we find many pages on which is written much that fill our hearts with joy and unspeakable peace; on which we read the promises given to us by the Man, Jesus the Christ. From these promises, from the lessons therein, we find, as we read slowly and with quiet heart, the solution to each “mystery” which the Old Year held for us and which was unfolded to us throughout each month of transforming renewal.
