The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | OCTOBER 1934

And now a word of encouragement to those timid souls who ask how it can be possible for an individual or a group, confronted by the apparently overpowering law of Mammon, to free themselves. How shall they make a living, if they forsake the protection of the laws by which man has made his living for many centuries past?

Have they never observed that the varying planes of being and their laws are but varying planes of consciousness? When they step from one plane of consciousness to another, higher or lower, they find themselves automatically working with and sustained by the laws of the new plane. Even if on the territory between planes the laws appear to be in conflict; nevertheless the laws of the new plane soon become the law for them.

Let me cite a little illustration taken from the things of earth. Now make the effort and imagine yourself shrinking to a size so small that by comparison a dewdrop would appear as large to you then as does the Empire Building to you now.

Where then are the laws of water which you had accepted as governing your world? You know water as always pressing downwards and outwards, eternally seeking a level, having no form of its own but adapting itself by fitting itself into all forms available for its use. Confronting this imagined dewdrop you would behold a mass of water as large in bulk as a lake, maintaining itself in the form of a mighty crystal sphere, with a skin necessary so tough as to appear impenetrable, and held inside this skin a teeming world of living monsters in units, groups, colonies and nations, all intensely active amid a great world of strange vegetable forms.

How many of your old laws of water would you recognize in this world? Should you approach too close to this shining sphere it would suddenly appear to reach out a giant hand and imprison you with irresistible power to its surface. If you could still retain your consciousness as a man, you would recognize that even a mere change of outward size could project you into and make you subject to a universe of laws that you had never dreamed of.

This illustration is of course taken only from material planes, but I beg you to believe that if you dared to change from your
