THE INTERPRETER’S HOUSE

IN THIS Department will be given interpretations of dreams and visions of those needing to know their inner meaning. We reserve for it only those of special interest and helpfulness.

THE REAL SELF

THREE or four years ago Mother attended a Christian Science lecture. As she sat in the audience waiting for the speaker to appear she had a strange vision. She saw me come out on the platform (a wonderfully different “me”) dressed in a beautiful pink fringle dress and white slippers, and appearing oh, so poised and greatly confident and looking so charming. (Of course I was not there, but at home.)

Mother looked at Father in amazement, wondering why he did not say something. Then it dawned upon her that no one had seen what she saw at all. While she watched, I came forward and stood so still and calm before the audience (all the while asking herself in astonishment if this were Edna—for I am always so very backward and shy and timid), and just as I opened my lips to speak, the vision faded, and in my place stood the lecturer, a dark, plain woman, my direct opposite in appearance.

Your mother’s vision was really a glimpse given her by her Higher Self of the real you and of the possibilities awaiting you. If it is your earnest desire to make that vision a reality, the way is shown in these Lessons, and it is wholly possible for you to attain it.

THE FLESHLY APPETITE

I HAD a curious dream. Do you remember my problem about food? My little sister had a birthday party, and had a fine delicious cake about which everybody raved. There was not quite enough cake for my brother to have two slices, so I told him I did not want any (of course I did, but I was practicing self-denial at the time), and he ate my slice.

That night I dreamed I took a bite out of a piece of cake and bit into a part of a serpent that was in the cake. Of course I was horrified and sick—almost, and would not take another bite. But my brothers, aged 18 and 20, were eating the same cake, not knowing the horrid snake was in it and that they were actually eating the snake. I woke up with a very strong desire to warn them, yet wondering all the while why I had not done so.

Your dream of the piece of cake with the serpent in it is really an illustration of what we were trying to tell you in our previous letter, but which you did not want to accept. A piece of cake symbolizes the sweets of life that appeal to the animal appetite, and every over-indulgement of that appetite finds a serpent lurking in such sense enjoyment. Your soul was trying to tell you this in your dream and also urged you to warn your brothers of it.
