The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | AUGUST 1936

Your interpretation of your dream was perfect and we are proud that you brought through the meaning so clearly. Answering your question, every man’s sins are his cross, which is made up of his weaknesses, shortcomings, and failings. Also he must carry that cross until he is strong enough to rise above it, which can come only through the help of Christ as you were shown in your dream. The feet symbolize understanding. Jose’s understanding was bound to imitation crosses, but your Higher Self would not let your understanding be bound to such a cross. Let this dream show you just what you need to do to free yourself forever from Jose and from that love of sense, for it contains for you a very wonderful lesson.

YOU MUST DECIDE

I WAS seated on the top of a high stone wall, very comfortable indeed, looking about me, when suddenly a man whom I do not know came running around the end of the wall and said, looking up at me, “Come on down. You can see fine from here.”

I looked the way he was facing and saw a beautiful, sunny beach with calm, smooth water stretching from it, and a lovely moon lighting the scene. But the man disappeared somehow. So I thought it might be a good idea to go down there, and I started myself to do so.

But when I put my arms down to move, the stone I touched broke and fell, and as I did the same with the other arm that stone fell; then when my body moved the whole wall crumbled under me. That is all. Where indeed do I not know.

I would like to know what that means to my spiritual growth, as several very vital things have happened to me lately.

Please know that our Lessons that your friend let you read are really only for those who have asked for them and who have requested to accompany us to the Kingdom. By so doing they dedicate themselves to a period of preparation for the Master’s Service. Do you want to do that, dear friend? If not, these Lessons are not for you and will do you no more good than will ordinary books and teachings.

Your vision in a way illustrates this. These Lessons apparently for the time being lifted you into a higher consciousness, symbolized by the high stone wall on which you were seated. You were very comfortable and were looking out upon beautiful scenery. The man who came running up to you and asked you to come down was your lower nature. He told you it was just as nice down there, so you were tempted to forego this higher view of things, and as a result you found that the spiritual foundation on which you were resting crumbled and you tumbled to earth.

Are you going to continue these studies and to climb thereby to a real spiritual understanding, or are you going to allow the voices of the world to draw you back and hold you down to the old level?
