The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | JANUARY 1936

Sweet foretaste of the life immortal,
Not the goal.
An instant—then to earth returning.
O my soul!
“Go back! Go back! to those benighted;
This the troth thou long hast plighted,
Serving Me.

“Serving Me in every brother
Great and small,
Knowing through the heat of battle
I Am all;
Hearing Me when e’er I talk,
Seeing Me beside thee walk,
The long, long trail.”

A MESSAGE TO WOMAN

“IT IS a large order, the largest ever placed; but it can be filled by the woman who aims constantly to reach that high plane where trust is ever kept with God; where force is ever interlocked with super-force: a plane from which she can keep clearly in view, like a master at a steering-wheel, the onward sweep of life and the port to which she is steering.

“A plane where she can keep clearly in mind the fact that nothing so much matters as the spirit of things; that houses matter little, if only the spirit in them is sweet; that clothes matter not at all, if only the spirit clothed is brave and joyous, that food even matters not, if only it nourishes the body so that the body may become a more perfect instrument for the spirit’s use,—that the object of the whole performance of life is not the acquisition of things, but the enabling spirit of things to become manifest.

“Not the chair, but the comfort in the chair; not the food, but the health in the food; not the house, but the atmosphere of the house.

“The physical is for a day; the spiritual—forever.”
