The Inner Life
THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | APRIL 1933
brothers” for food and clothing; but we must not in the meantime condemn those who do not see that far. Self righteousness and condemnation are as negative as cruelty, and the New Age will indulge in none of such.
Above all, we must pray for the animals—every day, just as we pray for any beneficent thing we wish to see manifested. Pray for man’s better understanding of them. War will not cease until cruelty to animals ceases; so while praying for Peace, do not forget one of its greatest factors—kindness to animals as well as to man.
While on the subject of prayer, let us pray that the eyes of the medical profession may be opened to a better subject for experimentation than animals. Suffering of animals in the laboratory is past telling, and the results are most unsatisfactory. Due to the vast influence the doctors wield, it seems to be a hopeless task to combat vivisection. That is why you are asked to pray for a better way.
The week of April 17th to 23rd has been set apart as National “Be Kind to Animals Week,” with April 23rd as Humane Sunday. It is hoped that all those in any way interested will make a point of helping at this time in material ways as well as with their prayers.
Any groups of Spiritual Workers which feel so led might have a special meeting, asking other animal lovers to attend and report upon humane activities. Leaders of Metaphysical Societies and pastors of Churches should be urged to stress the subject in their lectures and services on Humane Sunday, April 23rd. This is already being done in some cases, and the practice should be encouraged.
