THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | AUGUST 1937
A WHITE BROTHER
ON JANUARY 15th, 1919, what I now look upon as a great revelation came to me. I was living in Louisville, Kentucky, and had been in Truth about ten years and was making a great effort to live it in my life. My husband, mother and two sons lived with me in a large house of ten rooms. A druggist and his wife had been living with me about a year, and that day they left my home for Ohio.
About 3:30 that afternoon my doorbell rang, and I opened the door to see a young man seemingly about 19 years of age. He wore a cap, had on a shirt scrupulously clean, but with no collar. His clothes were threadbare but clean. He said to me, “Have you a room to rent?”
I asked him, “Why have you come here for a room, I have no sign for roomers? I do not take boys into my home to room.”
He removed his hat and said, “I am not a boy; I am 30 years old.” A peculiar feeling and cold shivers came over me, for I remembered that was Jesus’ age when He took up His ministry. It made me feel unaccountably sad, and I said, “Come in and see the room.”
He came in and asked the price, which was $4.00. Then he said to me, “You are studying Science?” I replied, “Yes, I am.” I then left him to get some towels, and brought my mother back with me into the room, for I felt he was not an ordinary man, and I wanted her to see him.
I introduced her, and he said, “You belong to the Pentecostal Movement.” She replied, “Yes, I do. What do you think of the Movement?” He said, “It is all right for the people who believe in it, for it has its place. But your daughter has a higher calling, and has been sadly delayed in her work; however, this coming year she will be taken into a new field and will meet her Teacher who will waken her. It is too bad that she has been detained on her way.”
I asked him what church he belonged to, and he said, “I belong to the Great White Brotherhood of Christ—a venerable School of Wisdom.” My mother said, “I never heard of any Religion like that.” He replied, “No, you never did; for it is an Invisible Church. We are living in the Last Days, and Christ will soon appear to the ones that are looking for Him. He will appear first in the East in the early morning.”
Mother then turned to me after we left him in his room, and said, as she was going away for the day, “He is not a young man here just to room; he is a revelation.” While I am away be very careful and kind to him.” I said, “Mother, what are you talking about?” She replied, “You will find out before he goes.”
I did not see him again that day, but the next evening at 7:30 I was getting ready for a lecture when he knocked at my living-room door. He asked me for a match and asked if I was going to the Science Lecture. I replied, “Yes sir.” When he said, “I wish I were going with you.” But because of his lack of a collar and his shabby clothes I said, “Maybe sometime you can go with me.” He then asked me to stop at his room after the meeting and tell him about it. I said I would, but I did not return home until quite late, and as there was no light in his room I did not disturb him.
I did not see him again, and on the next morning, which was Tuesday, I went into his room to make his bed. On the table was an unsealed envelope, with two new dollar bills in it, addressed to me. I left the room at once, feeling sad and lonely as though some one of my family was dead.
The next evening—Wednesday—my mother returned home from her visit and the first thing she said was, “How is the young man getting along?” When I told her all about it, she said, “You will soon see some change in your life.” I then realized that she knew what she was talking about.
That was in January, 1919, and the following April I lost my husband and my mother two weeks apart. The next September I came to this city and the same Winter I met the one who was the Teacher he said I was to meet.
