The Inner Life 1933
cepted the theory of vaccination. I however seemed to be in worse condition than any of the others.
After the physician left, I did some thinking. I decided I did not have time to have small-pox. If my system was already filled with the poison of the disease, why couldn’t I accelerate the process and eliminate it through the pores of the skin, if it was to come in the form of pustules. There was one spot already in evidence upon my forehead. I had received the letter from which I quoted a few weeks before this emergency occurred. I decided to accept it as a fact and act accordingly.
I made the following statement, “Cells of my body, you have the power to step up your activity, and now this very moment, start to eliminate every inharmonious substance from my body. Get busy and do it.” I said this over many times (which I now know was not necessary). I brought all my will to bear upon my command, fully convinced that they would hear me and act accordingly. In a very few minutes I went to sleep. I did not awaken until 5 A. M.
I had taken a bath with plenty of soap and hot water. It being Monday, the outing-flannel night-gown I was wearing was clean that evening. The sheets on the bed had also been changed at the same time. I am stating this to show that the bed and my body were clean and free from any odors. Yet when I awoke I was almost stifled by the odor of small-pox. My gown was wringing wet, and the bed sheets were soaked. I immediately arose and took a hot bath. I was up and on my feet for fourteen hours that day, and never felt better in my life.
Anyone can do the same thing with even minor conditions, but unless it is an emergency that should not be put aside, it is better that we allow the involuntary processes to work automatically.
