the publisher began to see that something had gone wrong, and wondered if his mind was giving way. This was in the summer of 1928.

It was about this time that Brother XII “succeeded in convincing the wife of a New York physician that she was his spiritual affinity, and nothing less than a reincarnation of Isis, while the ‘chela’ himself was an embodiment of Osiris. It had been ordained, he declared, that they should be the parents of Horus, the leader of the New Age!”

When the governors of the Aquarian Foundation learned of all this, they immediately called the Brother XII to account. An insurrection followed, which resulted, in October, 1928, in the dissolution of the Foundation, a suit against and the arrest of Brother XII for the return of $10,000 of $23,000 donated to the movement by Mrs. W. A. T. Connally, a widow, which Brother XII had surreptitiously withdrawn from the treasury without authority. But the widow was sent for and testified in court that the money was to be used as he saw fit, and so he was liberated. But as a result of the fiasco, the deluded wife of the New York physician became insane and was taken back East, the Order was broken up, and there were hundreds of disillusioned followers.

BUT THE Brother XII was not yet finished, although his organization had fallen to pieces. He wrote personal letters to all former followers and succeeded in inducing a number still to believe in him. But those who did were held to the strictest secrecy and were invited to join the new colony he established on an adjacent island he had purchased with the widow’s money; but requiring everyone joining to give all they had to the colony (which meant to him), in return for which they would be cared
