The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | MAY 1936

First try to realize that in the Garden of Eden man had things and conditions we might say ideally perfect; that there he had everything he needed and was given dominion over all the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens and over every living creature. In other words, everything he could possibly want and use was provided him.

Then why should he need the aid of a woman as a helpmeet? Only because there must have been something lacking in his nature, as he was, that woman alone, separate from him, could help him attain. What could that be, especially if man at that time actually contained within himself all that woman is and has?

Those who have studied the Soul articles in the first year’s issues of this magazine may remember the answer to this question.* We will show herein what it was that had not yet unfolded in man’s nature and how only by separating the two phases of him represented by the male and female into bodies and personalities of their own could his nature be developed and rounded out to the perfection God intended for him.

Try to understand that man is not his body but is a spiritual being and as such is pure consciousness; that his mind is an outer extension of his spiritual consciousness, and his physical body is but his mind’s creation—is but what mortal mind has thought it to be and what it now appears.

Next try to realize that certain more advanced specimens of the race (generically called Adam) were brought into the Garden of Eden because they had evolved to the blossoming stage, had become “living souls”—the Lord God having “breathed” into them His Holy Spirit and thereby became reborn and were lifted into a higher consciousness. In other words, the Lord God of these men (the Sons of God or Divine Selves of these reborn souls) had now “descended” into their souls, had taken possession of them and was living there, uniting their consciousness with His—in the Garden of their souls; and these Adam men were the first-born in human form of those who had awakened spiritually and who had in them the possibility of regeneration or of being Christed.
