The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | OCTOBER 1935

no awareness of words spoken either physically or spiritually. Apparently the mind of itself announces the color to be red.

“In things pertaining to occult philosophy, this faculty seems to be the particular reward of the teacher. If the lay instructor is actually in contact with the higher worlds, he will learn far more while he is teaching than will those to whom he is explaining the subjects under discussion, the ‘clair-cognizance’ revealing spontaneously that which the faculties of the mind under normal conditions could not reason out in months. This is the only so-called psychic faculty the coming of which should not be viewed with a certain amount of apprehension. The premature development of clairvoyance and psychism is a serious impediment to the spiritual growth of the student, who is all too likely to wander astray in the byways of the astral plane and end in the blind alley of transcendentalism.”

It must be remembered, however, that the instructions of these ancient Schools apply to and apparently emanate largely from Eastern sources, and have all more or less been handed down from antiquity. Which means that many of the souls now living in Western bodies have been members of such Schools, have undergone the training and discipline therein taught, and the knowledge and power thereby gained have been built into their soul consciousness. For it is well understood that souls, when they have learned their lessons in a certain country or race, incarnate in new countries, and always westward as the Star of Empire wended its way, such souls being always the pioneers and builders of new civilizations. That is the reason why many today in their souls know certain laws and the value of certain teachings when contacting them for the first time in this life. But it does not mean that their present minds do not need a certain amount of teaching, training and preparation for the work each soul came here to do.

Today, because much of the general teaching and training formerly given in the ancient Schools is now available in books and is freely taught in Metaphysical and New Thought Movements, and as many candidates have been taught by their souls when being put through such Movements, thereby being prepared for initiation, there are now scores of hundreds approaching initiation who feel the need of wise instruction and guidance at this particular time in the inner mysteries that are beginning to unfold to their quickened consciousness.
