The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | FEBRUARY 1935

for the time being he is in a finer body in which he “looks down” upon the physical world and even sees there his body of flesh.

Try to realize that some people think so strongly, or put so much force or feeling into and thus vitalize their thoughts, that they think they actually see what they are merely thinking at the time. These people are the so-called psychic type. While the mental type in their thinking simply imagine things and do not put any force or feeling into their “imaginations” as do the psychic and more emotional type. Both types may think the same thing, or may catch the vibrations of the same thought or idea from another mind, either in the inner or the outer world; but those of the psychic type think they actually see as a vision or real occurrence what is thought, while to those of the mental type it comes but as a mental impression.

Thus clairvoyance is not so much clear mental “seeing” as it is strongly vitalized thinking. Or in other words, it is the mind’s automatic interpretations of the feelings caused by the vibrations of persons, incidents, experiences, or conditions coming to it from inner or outer sources.

Therefore, when the interest and attention of the consciousness of one of a psychic nature is withdrawn from the outer to something of an inner nature, the mind in its ignorance assumes that it withdraws from the body; whereas all that it really does is to rise into or enter a higher rate of vibration—a higher plane of consciousness. Oftentimes as a first experience it causes a sense of dizziness or whirling, which gradually wears off when more practice is had in such inner or abstract thinking.

It at first seems with them, when attempting any inner work—such as going in consciousness to the soul of another—as if one actually leaves the body and flies through space; some believing they feel the wind rushing by and see the cities and country as they pass over them. But in reality it is not different from the experience of the mental type who just imagines himself going to another’s soul in spirit, but who instantly sees and feels himself there talking to that other, but having paid no attention to the scenery or to the space between while going where the soul of the other happened to be.

In time, with practice, the one of a psychic nature will likewise pay no attention to intermediate space or states of consciousness,
