lying right beside her, and turned the pages to the New Testament. She then levelled her forefinger at her mother and began to “read” in her baby fashion.
I looked at the page of the Bible and found she had opened to the 24th Chapter of St. Matthew. She ran her finger along the page as she “read on,” stopping now and then to look at us both and to emphasize by pounding her finger on the page.
Helen began to laugh heartily as though it were merely a cute coincidence. Beverly looked at me bewildered and rather appealing. I said, “Of course, Beverly, it is all written right there, but mother didn’t know you knew it.”
Then I took the Bible and read to Helen a few of the verses to show how they applied to what we had been talking about. Beverly had such a pleased smile on her face, and listened very intently.
Helen said it gave her an uncanny feeling, and she wondered if her daughter was going to be queer. I told her that it would be a queerness of which she would be very proud probably, and I begged her if she didn’t feel inclined to teach Beverly to pray, never to interfere or ridicule her own natural attempts to pray.
Then, perhaps to show to me that it was not accident that she turned to this chapter, soon after this I lost my position and was in grave trouble, and the following incident occurred.
Beverly had learned to walk by this time, and when I was leaving her apartment she followed me to the door and indicated that she wanted to come home with me; so I brought her. I placed her on the table in front of me, but I didn’t have much zest to talk and play with her as usual. She put her hand under my chin and turned my face so she could look in my eyes, and she gazed at me long time and her look was so loving and tender that tears came to my eyes. She then turned to the Bible and opened it at the 18th Psalm, then to the 23rd and to the 91st, and finally to the 54th chapter of Isaiah—running her finger along under the words.
Sometime before this I had one day held her on my lap while there were two or three people around, and had whispered in her ear, “I love you, Beverly Anne.” She immediately turned her other ear to my mouth and I said the same thing into that. It
