“SEEING THROUGH”
By Gertrude R. Richards
THE STRANGER stood on the Corner.
To the passerby the Stranger was but a person standing there.
But the Stranger saw with discerning eyes and with understanding love.
People—big and little, rich and poor, cultured and ignorant passed by on their several ways.
Around each one the Stranger saw the thoughts uppermost in each consciousness, and he spoke to the soul within.
He touched a man with tenderness and said, “You possess much wealth, stocks, gold and many holdings. All your life you have put forth effort to acquire these things. Why are your eyes anxious? Why are you strained and tense when you have everything you need?”
The man was on the point of entering his limousine at the curb, when he replied,
“I’m worried about how to keep my holdings and avoid these terrible taxes. It has seemed good to accumulate much, but now I fear the people and their new ideas. This wealth is my life—my power.” Through tightened lips, he repeated: “It’s my life. I must keep it—keep it!”
“Yes, I see,” replied the Stranger. “Your ‘mental back’ is so bent with the burden you are carrying that you have forgotten God is your Life. Do you know you are bent so low that you would inspire the pity of people if they could see. You are missing the real joy of life. Awake, Brother, know the Christ within you is your life, your abundant supply, and He can give you infinite power.”
A woman stood watching the limousine as it drove away. Her eyes were wistful. The Stranger knew that in her heart was much good-will, but she sighed with envy.
“Why,” asked the Stranger as he touched her arm, “do you want riches so much?”
