THE ASCENSION

AND WHEN he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

“And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold two men stood by them in white apparel;

“Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”—Acts 1:9-11.

“And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.”—John 3:13.

MUCH is heard these days about the Ascension, and some strange claims are made regarding it and regarding those who have made this remarkable attainment. We would have all our readers know the true meaning of “The Ascension,” and this article is to make it clear, so that none may be misled into thinking it is something that it is not.

We first call your attention to the above words in the first chapter of Acts, which presumably give us a description of the Ascension of Jesus. But if we should say and show to you that this was not His real or first Ascension, but was only an Ascension of Jesus, you will see that it cannot have just the significance so many attribute to it as an illustration of what some souls may attain.

Let us imagine ourselves present with the Apostles standing before Jesus on that day “in which he was taken up” . . . “after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen.”

“To whom also he showed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.”

And when, in answer to their question, “Lord, wilt thou at this time restore the Kingdom to Israel?” He said,

“It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in His own power.

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.
