other workers—would be the ones to support such principles, and that the followers of Mammon would be the ones to take selfish advantage of such “business” principles. Strange to say it was the other way about. And I believe every true spiritual worker will find that out, if he goes as deeply into it as I did.

For the followers of Mammon have received unquestioned benefits from Mammon’s training, and many times they will acknowledge and promptly pay an indebtedness that the seeker of the Kingdom will find a hundred reasons for not paying. Also, at this present time, the real spiritual worker is frequently in the same depleted condition that I am in, and is the last one able to help in a financial way those that come to him.

In other words, I believe that either there is a definite reason and purpose back of the poverty of spiritual workers and their past negligence or inability to help each other, or else we are standing at last face to face with the one great enemy that must be overcome.

The latter would seem the more reasonable explanation, when one considers the many business acts of the self done in the guise of business legitimacy, commercial necessity, forced by competition, threatened bankruptcy, and the thousand and one other justifications of such acts that have come to be accepted in our social and business world.

I cannot believe that spiritual workers would be so pressed at that one point, as I and almost everyone I have known has been, if there were not a purpose which it was intended I should learn. When I try to compare all the different things which a man must learn before he becomes spiritually worthy, I recognize the wonderful wisdom of the parable of the rich young man who sought to be Jesus’
