“Now let’s talk this over quietly: then if you want to take your digitalis, do so. God is in it and it can’t harm you, but you have a much more competent physician right within you who would not prescribe it for you.”
We had our cup of tea and she told me that what had brought on her belief of heart trouble was friction with her husband—who was “simply dreadful to live with.” I said to her,
“My dear, you do not even know what your husband is, or you would find him very easy to live with.”
Vehemently she replied, “I know very well what he is! He is a horrible person.”
“No, I replied. “Your husband is an angel, come down from heaven to help you and to make you strong. And you love him; you have told me so many times when you were not angry. Since you love him, bear with him. Every time you look at him, see the sorrowing eyes of the Master looking out at you, yearning for you to bear with Him, to express your love for Him.”
Immediately she wanted to know where I got such ideas. So I said,
“Before I answer, you must tell me why you came to me today. You were ill and troubled, why did you come so far out of your way to me?”
She said, because she seemed to know that I would put her in a different frame of mind; that I had something for her that would be a help. Then I told her about the little book, and she immediately opened her purse, took out some money and told me to order one for her. As I wanted one for my own, I made the order double, and
