The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | MARCH 1935

IN THE WORLD BUT NOT OF IT

ABOUT two weeks ago I had just awakened and the first thought was on “The Truth that Frees,” and “We must not visualize anything.”

I was wide awake, and without warning I seemed to rise, as if I were a bright light just over my body but entirely free from it. And I, in this light, said, “Now I can go wherever I wish to join of those I went to were all and some were not. I have not fully returned to the body. I mean by this that the body seems the mechanical part of me. I seem to be outside, not inside of it.

As you know it has been hard for me to stay here and in this neighborhood. Now I feel I must stay here until I can see Light everywhere; I must see God’s Light in everything and everybody. I am not making a very good start, but I dare not slip back into the body thoughts.

I feel terribly alone, but not afraid; in fact I am secure and peaceful. The body seems like a shadow and it is hard for me to describe with this body’s brain understanding what I see in the Light. While in it (the body), I seem unable to see or express anything but material thoughts. It is a continual warfare, but no matter what happens to it, I must stay in this Light.

I am very critical in my heart of the things I see; that is the cause of the warfare. But why should this self try to fight so when I know it is not me? Although I can see nothing in this higher consciousness—no forms, there is a wonderful inner joy all the time. I am so thankful to you daily, for the understanding I have.

THIS experience is very illuminating, for it gives a clear realization of what it means to be in the body but not of it. In other words, here is shown how one retires into one’s soul consciousness and there looks out and sees the unreality of all things in the material world. One who has had that experience should strive continually to keep in that consciousness, and not to slip back into one’s “body” thoughts. For we must all learn to be in the world, but not of it anymore, if we would prepare ourselves for Christ’s coming and for His use. It was a blessed experience and we are happy with our dear friend that she could have the joy of it.
