The Inner Life
THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | MARCH 1934
of us at once dived under and caught the ends of the boat (I wasn’t conscious of any concern about it, or fear), tipping it up and completely inverting it to drain out all the water; then we both went walking on the water to retrieve the oars. I awoke before I got back.
The strange thing about it was, when we turned the boat back to drain out the water (though it didn’t seem at all strange to me then), that in the bottom, underneath by the changes of the boat’s position, was a smaller than life-sized replica of myself, as if it were a rubber balloon formed like me, only partially inflated. This I couldn’t make out, and I wonder if you could help me.
The man who seemed to be your husband and also your teacher was your Higher Self. The small boat was your mortal consciousness. The great old-fashioned ship under full sail was a higher state of consciousness. The sea was the sea of your emotions and thoughts. The girl that was running ahead on the water was an idea or example of what you should do, pictured to show you that you should rise above your emotions and should “walk on” and control them instead of allowing yourself to be “drowned” by them. With these symbols explained, you should be able to get the meaning of the rest of the dream, and to see how what remained in the boat while you were thus “above” the personal consciousness, was your little self partially inflated like a rubber balloon.

MY DREAMS always have a lesson in them. In my last dream my home stood up so much higher than the surroundings and looked so cheerful with the lights shining through the windows that I hastened my steps. As I came within a foot of it, I noticed a little projection I could not surmount. In front of me, to the right stood my brother offering a helping hand; to the left sat an unknown man. I said to him I knew I could make it with just a little help, but he did not move. Again I told him I could reach my home with a little help; still no move from him. All of a sudden I felt strong arms under mine—from the back, and I called out that I wanted to go up, not down—up, not down!
This has been a great lesson as well as a great help to me; not to look on the outside for help, but within where the Master of all masters resides.
