done much; but, alas, he proved unequal to the task. His very success brought about his undoing. Not for us to measure his guilt. Brother XII has lost his way. We can only mourn one more soldier fallen from the ranks. Let us do so in all humility; for who knows but that it may be our turn next? Have we ourselves no weaknesses upon which the dark forces may work with deadly subtlety to our undoing? And may we not with advantage remind ourselves, in face of recurring instances of failure following initial success, that “There, but for the grace of God, go I”? And finally, what further vindication is needed for the rigorous demands of true occultism, than that the ethical standards of every chela should stand the most stringent tests?
