The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | NOVEMBER 1936

Father in Heaven, a Son of God, come to possess thee and to be One with thee henceforth.

When thou growest strong enough to bear it ye will then know that thy Father and I and thou art One in Christ—the Great Love, and that God is All that we are.

THE PATH

(A Vision)

By Peter Lion

’Twas a ladder I saw
Erected, to draw
My thoughts toward the life above.
As I gazed, there appeared
On each stanchion upreared
This word—in big letters—LOVE.

Then a voice cried “Attend!
Ye who would ascend
This ladder, must each pay the price.
Note well then ye brave!”
And there flashed on each stave
In big letters, “SACRIFICE.”

I replied “O friend stay!
Tell me an easier way.
To climb this means pain, grief and loss.”
Then transcendently bright,
There burst on my sight
A vision of Christ on the cross.

O speechless rebuke
Was his agonized look.
List! “Father, Thy will, not My own.”
Then the ladder returned.
And this lesson I learned,
BY THE CROSS IS THE PATH
TO THE CROWN.
