THE PRINCE

ONE EVENING I became aware that someone was in the room, and looking up I saw, not very distinctly, a rather tall man in evening clothes. He wore no emblem of royalty nor badge of honor, but was distinguished bearing and I knew that he was of high social position as well as deeply occult. He did not say much, but seemed to look me over, or through. As he was leaving he remarked, “I shall come again.”

“What shall I call you?” I asked. “The Prince,” he replied, and vanished.

It was not long before he came again, and this time he showed me his castle. It stood on the crag of a mountain, with many trees about it, and the surroundings were wild and lonely. He said:

“I am considered rather a mysterious person, I believe. I belong to one of those Occult Communities of which you have heard, but am occupied with affairs in Europe, being actively interested in political matters, and traveling, sometimes in disguise, from one country to another. I have many working under me, some conscious, and others quite unconscious of my purpose.”

Another time he said, “I know all the secret Orders, the plots and counterplots, in Europe. Nothing is hid from Those Who Know, and when things go too far we interfere. You read the other day of a man in a certain town who overheard two men talk in a rather suspicious way about their plans, and he went to the police and told them of it. The police followed them to their rendezvous where there were a number of other men, all of whom were arrested, as there were arms, explosives and much ‘Red’ literature in the room; it was proved that they were to carry out their plans the next day, which would have occasioned great destruction and death of many important people.

This discovery may have seemed accidental, but it was not. That country was not destined to have trouble now, but the time is coming when far greater disasters, physical and otherwise, will strike the earth in various places and no hand will be raised to
