The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | JANUARY 1936

prophecy of that which is to be. Jesus is then my Self that I must show forth outwardly. Nothing has lived but I alone.

I wrote once when I was still very young, “Sometimes I think that I alone exist, and that the world was created for my development.” If this is so, who can answer me but God the Father? If it is so, and I do not say it is, then either all about me is illusion, or else it is I in all others who have consciousness in them.

But why more than one individual consciousness? Is it necessary? I only know that I feel a burning desire to recreate, to mould anew—to atone for all that I have done. My desire has grown beyond my will and my strength.

How reconcile these conflicting forces? The work I do is so puny compared with what I know I must do. To bring but a few souls into the Path, when I so long to heal every suffering one!

Your The Impersonal Life has brought realization to so many. It contains all that is necessary. And I know that only the pure Christ could have inspired it. I know it because the same flood of Divine Love stirs in my heart that I experience when He allows me to see Him.

He taught me for many years, and was so close that when He left, I very nearly died in despair. But He had to go—I was depending too much upon His personal self. It was necessary that He go that He might be born in my heart.

I know that He will answer me through you. And you will understand when I tell you that I want you to lead me. Just as little Saint Theresa asked for a double portion of Love, I ask for a double portion of Faith and Strength, as well as Love. In fact I am audacious enough to ask to be Christed now!

I have never written to you like this. Perhaps this experience was needed to tear down my reluctance and timidity. Help me not to fail. It is for the world I ask it. Small as I am apparently I dare to offer myself to God to be His instrument. Help me, please, in my purpose. Keep me on the Path. Strengthen my will and my ardor. And please write as if you were my brother—the finite me needs that personal touch so much.
