THE SOUL
LEAVING THE BODY
I THOUGHT I was in a place which contained at least two dead bodies. They were to be called for by a mortician shortly. It seemed my Teacher was with me, and He suggested that this would be a fine time to learn how to enter and reanimate a dead body. I was perfectly willing, and immediately, I was occupying the dead body, which was that of a man dressed in a light gray suit with a flower in the buttonhole, partly dressed for burial.
My Teacher instructed me to do several things in further preparation for the burial. I used the hands as I would my own, trimming the toe nails, and had a moment of horror as I realized that one great toe had been hollowed out where the nail had been, in their preparation, and the cavity had been filled with a bit of surgical plaster.
Upon finishing I noticed the morticians coming up to the door to take the bodies to some other place for the completion of their preparation, and I was panic-stricken for a moment and said to my Teacher, “How on earth will I get out of this dead body now that they are coming for it?” It was natural and easy to be in it, but I was afraid I couldn’t get out in time to avoid complications of some sort when they came. But he reassured me, telling me that it was just as easy as the other—all I needed to do was to walk in the body back to where it had been, lie down, and then see myself as standing outside it and looking down at the body—to feel myself there, and I’d be there. And I did and I was, and I came awake.
