to the garden. This garden has at one end a small temple of glass. Before the temple is a pool with a fountain, and about the pool are seats. My Soul sometimes sits near the pool before a table. On the table is a book with ivory covers, and in this book my Soul sometimes writes. On the seats girls often sit to listen to what is read, or sung, or said, or to talk gravely and happily. At a lectern, before the temple door, often a Shining One stands to speak to my Soul and to the girls.

At first my Soul’s garments and those of the girls were of soft gray, or blue, lavender or rose, varying from time to time. The Shining One is always in glowing white.

Once my Soul, in lavender garments, could not write in the book with ivory covers, because certain small things in the hem of her garment troubled her. They were a small gray kitten, a tiny gray puppy, and a little gray monkey. A Voice said, “These are animal pleasures.” An attendant came from the temple—a youth, brown and happy, in white, short tunic—lifted the little creatures into a basket and carried them away.

My Soul wept, and a Voice said, “Go into the pool.” My Soul obeyed, stepping down into the blue water, extending her arms above her head until only the hands rested upon the surface of the water among the lilies. Then even the finger-tips disappeared. Then my Soul emerged slowly, and came from the pool, and her garments were pearly white.

One night the Shining One said, “Come,” and my Soul, with the girls, stepped with him above the garden to a field that stretched far, covered with luxuriant green grass in which grew beautiful white flowers, to distant mountains where a radiant white light rayed out like great
