The Inner Life

than they outmanifest), and then if held strongly and long enough in the mind they outmanifest on the outer plane. The ideals are first pictured by the Higher Self to the soul, arousing in it a desire to express those ideals, and causing the soul then to inspire that desire in the human mind.
The things that were being enjoyed by the soul in that “Garden consciousness,” it seems to us were promises of the full realization of such desires to be given as a recompense for the suffering endured—when the purifying process was over; thus allowing the human mind to see to what it was all leading.
Yes, it is an absurdity for the personality to try to do things of itself; for of itself it does and can do nothing. It is always the soul doing it or trying to do it through the personality.
First there is the Higher Self, the Son of God, the All-perfect, All-knowing, All-loving, All-powerful Spirit of God in man. Then there is the soul that through the Higher Self’s guidance is being prepared for “rebirth” so that He can enter the soul and possess it, and thereafter dwell in it and direct all of its activities. Previous to such rebirth the soul learns only through its mistakes, through the discovering what is not what the Higher Self intends for it. But always remember that the earth life in the human personality is the only field and opportunity for the experiences that will teach the soul such knowledge.
It is probable that you should not indulge too much in the Garden consciousness, at least until you understand just why it is permitted. You were shown it so you as a soul could bring forth in your human self what already exists in the inner. Then why should you reject what is desirable in this heavenly realm? Why else are these ideals shown you, if they are not sooner or later to be realized and made manifest? Can you not see that you must someday learn to work from the soul consciousness and its knowing, and direct the activities of your human self in all its thinking, speaking and doing? Until one learns to do that one is but wandering around in the wilderness of self, lost and confused in one’s effort to find a way out.
Those Greater Ones you were privileged to meet and consult with bring out another and most interesting phase of the inner realm of causes, and we will be glad to take that up more fully in a later letter.
