CALLED TO HIGHER SERVICE
THE Editor of the INNER LIFE MAGAZINE, and the Writer of the IMPERSONAL LIFE and other Impersonal Works passed from this plane of activity to a wider field of action on September 24th.
The following so perfectly expresses what those near and dear to him feel, that we print it without further comment.
HE DID not die. Such a word as death does not befit a Soul like his. He saw afar a field of work, so mighty and so vast, that life unhampered by the body, called to him, and gave him power to rise above earth’s limitation, into what is to us the vast unknown, where, hidden from our mortal eyes, God’s mighty storehouse teems with treasures, crying for expression. This life which we believe the real, faded as dim mist, before the sunrise. He saw the vastness of the unexplored; saw lands of mighty prospect, where Souls which he had left when his desire for service, called him to this plane, were waiting for re-union. He had lived out his life of service here, yet, willing to serve more, he lingered on, knowing the need was vast for our dark planet. He waited as a loved one waits beside a needy friend, asking “what more is there that I can do for you, is there no other burden that I can lift to lighten yours?”
He waited in his great desire to help, but God’s Voice called from out the far extended realm of distance, unmeasurable even to the strongest telescope the earth affords. As a wanderer climbing mountains hard with stones, and summits hidden, in answer to that call, he left the beaten track to mount with ease what seems to our holden eyes a star strewn sky, the depths of which we do not know. There all the treasures he had earned, awaited him, the Book of Life, unknown till now, opened its pages before his fascinated eyes; all that he had believed and more a thousand times, stood out in front of him. The speck of earth he left behind, fell from him like an unwanted garment, or like a crumb which falls unnoticed from the table to the floor.
“Behold, I live!” the message comes triumphant, as with the swiftness of electric power, the great undying Soul cuts its way through the vastness of the never-ending treasurehouse of God. —Evelyn Whitell.
