Can you comprehend that this was all taking place in consciousness, her human mind picturing it as a place, a garden, etc., because of it understanding things only in terms of the thought-forms to which it was accustomed? But it shows clearly how, as one rises in consciousness spiritually—or in reality retires within toward the center of one’s being, one always enters that Light; and that as one goes deeper into It and grows accustomed to Its brilliancy, it gives entrance into a clear consciousness where one sees deeper into the Great Reality.

WHAT makes for soul-growth? Reverence for duty, with power to force the Will along repellent duty-lines; patience to keep it thus even unto the solemn duty-goal; tolerant self-knowledge which includes all others in that self-tolerance; faith, hope, charity—and the greatest of these is Charity.

What makes for soul-dwarfing? That despair based on disillusion which will not hope any more, will not labor, will not even strive to look up to the heights; that cynic coldness of the heart which, unwarmed by faith, gazes appalled at sight of the word pandemonium; that gnawing envy-hatred which would resentfully claim for its own starving life whatever seems successful joy-fraught, and good—in the lives of others.
