The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | DECEMBER 1936

Do you remember how your teacher in your high school days once showed you how to make a magnet? It was by inducting a current of electricity through a bar of iron. When this was done the iron bar would pick up pieces of metal or other substances and hold them so tightly that some force would have to be used to pull them from it.

You who have followed instructions have been making a magnet of yourself. You have taken the first steps towards drawing into yourself the consciousness of the presence of the Universal Mind or Mind of God, which is so nearly like electricity in its action that sometimes they are confused in the minds of those who are seeking the nature of the great First Cause. There is in you a germinal something which can be developed into Christ-like proportions. Only by identifying yourself with the Cosmic can this be attained. The nature of the Cosmic is Love, Peace, Goodwill, and Altruistic Service. God never seeks for self; He always gives—gives freely to all His creations of man and beast and to all animate and inanimate beings. The so-called inanimate receives as much of the freely given life of God as do animals and men.

The spirit of God is in everything that is created. Only man has the power to drive the God-Spirit from himself or to admit it with greater power in his mind and affairs. To man has been given the power of choosing whether he will rise into an understanding of his being and use his God-given powers, or sink lower and lower in spiritual understanding until even the beasts in their relations with their fellows are superior to him.

How then can we put aside our selfish natures, and dwell in peace, harmony and happiness? How can we make of ourselves Sons of God and ultimately develop to the point spoken of by one of the disciples when he said that we shall, in time, “judge angels?”

We can put on the Christ Mind by opening our minds to the truth that a kind, loving, indulgent God Who delights to give us joy and happiness is always waiting for us to turn our minds to Him; to think about Him, to desire to be taught of Him; to desire Him to dwell with us and to show Himself to us.

In the degree to which we desire to understand the things of God, even to that degree does God draw nigh to us. We can
