qualities and forces of their natures that stand in the way and oppose, with such effect that usually the good intentions soon fade away and they find themselves back in the same state they were in before. Everyone has experienced this. Why is it?
One of the chief reasons is, that man is a part of humanity and his consciousness is a part of the race consciousness, and that the race consciousness of the mass of humanity has not reached higher than the nature of the average man. Take all of the many hundreds of millions of people in the world, including the savages of Africa, Australia and South America, the coolies of China and India, and the lower laboring classes of Europe and the Americas, and it can be easily seen that the average of their natures is little above that of beasts of burden; which means that their animal natures still largely rule and influence much that they say and do. This is proved by the nature of their common thoughts and conversation, and one need only to be with such to feel and realize the quality of their minds and that it is practically impossible for them to do any original thinking for themselves. They are led, ruled and used by superior minds.
Of course there are all grades of minds above theirs, but you would find, the higher the minds are in intelligence, the fewer they are in number; proving that the more intelligent a man becomes the more power he attains to lift himself above his lower nature, and that as he is able to rule his lower nature he acquires the power also to guide, direct and rule his fellows of lesser intelligence.
In the earlier stages of his awareness of his superior intelligence, he usually exercises the accompanying power to enslave and exploit his more ignorant brothers; but as his intelligence increases he gradually learns that he is a part of humanity and that he cannot profitably improve the conditions in his life, and thus lift up himself, and at the same time neglect the condition of his brothers; to make permanent his own improved condition, he must instruct and help his weaker and more ignorant fellows to develop and utilize the forces of their natures to the betterment of their condition.
Of course there are comparatively few as yet who have reached that state of intelligence where they are so guiding and instructing their fellows; but more are daily coming into that understand-
