If the soul is spiritually “awakened” and advanced, it soon gravitates to one of the “heavens” of the mental realms, but if still held by ignorance and its personal desires and passions, it is drawn to one of the planes of the Desire World—the Summerland of the Spiritualists, or to the low planes of Purgatory close to the earth—the earth-bound state; where it stays until it has been purged of all the passions, desires and inclinations of the lower nature, through digesting the lessons learned in the earth life—all of which takes many years with most, when it finally gravitates to what to it seems heaven.

After a greater or less period in “heaven”—which is really a necessary rest in order to assimilate the fruits of earth’s lessons and thereby to store up needed energy and strength for future use—the soul again feels the pull of all the as yet unredeemed forces of its consciousness; and urged by the Spiritual Ego and guided by the Great Beings Who then take charge, it seeks an opportunity, a proper family and conditions in which to reincarnate, in order further to unfold and grow in spiritual consciousness, understanding and strength, which can be accomplished only in physical life by lifting up and transmuting the unredeemed forces of its human nature and of its consciousness that still thinks itself “separate.”

THE foregoing shows that mediums can and do draw the souls of the departed back to earth life, but at disastrous cost to those concerned. It also shows that those that come in response to their call in ordinary seances are chiefly “shells” or the departed “personalities” of the deceased, and are not the souls themselves.
