The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | NOVEMBER 1936

As we traveled the Brother spoke, “My son, you are on the Path to Immortality; this Light you now are is the only way; its reflection is the only lasting and eternal help to humanity, our brothers of earth. Abide in it, keep your mind’s attention upon it always, and let your Light shine in your life and actions.”

Again we paused in our ascent up the shaft of Light; the sides of the shaft became transparent, and again I was allowed to see out. But we were higher along the path now. As I looked out I saw the seemingly the greater ones of earth—leaders, those whom the world looked up to, Teachers, Lawyers, Ministers, Rabbi’s Priests, etc.

As I watched I saw how the people worshiped these people; I saw the power they had, the seeming service they rendered in my brothers of earth. The thought came, if theirs was true service, I would like to be as they. When I heard the Brother say, “No, look! they are only glorifying the world and themselves. They are not conscious of our presence. Their power is limited, as their work is not eternal, it is only temporary.”

As I watched and became interested, I became conscious that I was a part of their consciousness and was assisting them. It seemed I was with them a long time, when all at once I became conscious there was something lacking there, that it did not give real satisfaction. I began thinking upon what this could be, and was again drawn into the shaft of Light, and the Brother said, “They are masters of worldly wisdom, but they have not yet become conscious of Love, the true Light.” Then I was back in my room again.

Again I pondered for weeks, many questions coming to my mind of what real service could be. It was very hard for me to see that the letting go of my brothers of earth was not following a selfish desire. I still wanted to help them in their tribulations and troubles.

About six months later the third experience came. This time we traveled up the shaft, passing at the first stop. Here I was free. Pausing at the second stop again I was free. Then we went on and out the end of the shaft of Light into a new world, a new consciousness, unlimited, unseparated, unbound. I was free, free, wholly free!

The Brother spoke again, “This is your real home, my son. This is what every brother of earth is unconsciously seeking.”
