The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | APRIL 1935

We wonder, however, if the discovery of these physical forces will be permitted, before man has proven his readiness and willingness to use them only in the service of the whole of humanity, instead of for the profit of a few men of a single nation?

Of one thing we may be sure; whoever attempts to use them for selfish or destructive purposes will surely reap the whirlwind.” For such forces can no more be thus wantonly utilized, than can the malignant forces of the lower astral world be invoked by curious or selfish seekers of the occult. —The EDITOR.

GOD—WHO, WHAT, WHERE?

I AM the kisses of the sun, I am the tears of rain,
I am the welcome breath of Spring that brings new life again;
I am the sprouting of the seed, the budding of a flower;
I am the beauty that men see unfolding every hour.
I am the singing of the birds, the rustling of the leaves;
I am the holy force of life in everything that breathes.
I am the thrill of harmony men feel but cannot tell;
I am the firm, unchanging law, that worketh all things well.
I am the Source which all men seek, I am their peace, their pain.
I am the courage of the weak that turns all loss to gain.
I am the hope that never dies, the ecstasy divine,
I am the Great Eternal Love that draws all life to mine.
—O. Z. Hamish.

MATTER AS SPIRIT

OUR senses are too dull and course to apprehend the subtle and incessant play of forces around us—the finer play and emanations of matter that go on all about us and through us. From a lighted candle or gas jet or glowing metal, shoot corpuscles or electrons, the basic constituent of matter, of inconceivable smallness—a thousand times smaller than an atom of hydrogen—and at the inconceivable speed of 10,000 to 90,000 miles a second. Think how we are bombarded by these bullets as we sit around the lamp or under the gas jet at night, and are all unconscious of them! We are immersed in a sea of forces and potentialities of which we hardly dream. —John Burroughs.
