What does that mean? It means that the love of each must be unselfish, constant and pure—not just the one with these qualities and the other selfish, undependable and immoral. If the latter there can be no true union; where any one of the last named qualities is in evidence can result only in unhappiness and misery.

But alas! How many of these false unions there are, and how few of the true ones!

Why is this? It is because of the human part of us seeking completion and happiness in another human being, and because of our instinctively seeking to express our highest nature through love, our minds build an ideal of the one loved and fail to see the weaknesses and shortcomings, believing our pure love fully reciprocated.

But what are the great majority to do who have entered into such a false union? That is the cry we are hearing from all sides from earnest souls wanting to do only what is right. We will try to answer this question, asking our readers to bear with us if we speak plainly on this most tabooed subject.

No two human beings were ever brought together, especially in the relationship of man and wife, but for some wise and good purpose. Remember, it was God, through the Higher Self of each, that caused them to meet and then want to marry each other. Surely God knew what He was doing, and His purpose is always good. From this you will learn why those “whom God hath joined together no man should put asunder.”—Mat. 19:6.

“This being so, every man and woman brought together as husband and wife must complement or fit in with each other in such a way as to bring about certain necessary conditions that will develop and round out their characters and bring wisdom to their understanding.

“Then the principal reason for the one coming to you as husband or wife is to help each of you to learn certain lessons you evidently failed to learn in the past, and this time to make you strive more determinedly to conquer those qualities or weaknesses in you which the other seems uncannily able to bring to the surface—each thus, under the direction of the Higher Self, actually teaching the other.
