WHAT did He mean by having come to fulfill the law? If you will remember, the laws of Moses and the prophets very plainly taught what they must not do in order to please Jehovah God. But when men obeyed faithfully His laws there was naturally a reward awaiting them, and for all of such God undoubtedly sent Jesus Christ to teach and lead them back to His—the Father’s home.

Humanity up to this time may be said to be as a wayward son, but when the son had learned what the wasting of his substance had brought him, and that this was not the way to happiness, freedom, and abundance, he remembered his Father’s home and resolved to return to it. It was then, and not until then, that humanity was ready to be shown the true way home, and so God sent His only begotten Son to lead His wayward children back to Him.

But Jesus Christ could lead only those who were able to recognize and accept Him, and then to follow and obey Him all the way back to God’s Kingdom. In that way He was the fulfillment of the promise of God to those who obeyed His laws.

St. John plainly tells us this in the seventeenth verse of the first chapter of his Gospel.

“For the law was given to Moses; but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

In other words the blessings of the spirit come not through merely obeying the law, but through following Jesus Christ all the way to the Kingdom.
