“So you were from the beginning of your earthly existence at least two persons. Two persons in one—a thinking, intelligent John Fillmore, capable of directing, and an unintelligent something also called John Fillmore which appeared to have life and intelligence, but evidently had not. For that something lies crushed and mangled back there among the rocks.

“Then, the only conclusion to be drawn is, that it was an automaton and could only seem to have feeling or intelligence or action so long as you, his co-dweller with it, or rather dwelt in it, used your intelligence to cause it to function as an exterior manifestation of WHAT YOU THOUGHT.”

This new departure from all previous concepts of life in the thinking of John Fillmore was shocking at first, but at last he had some premise on which to build; and this concept was so reasonable and explained the mystery of existence so thoroughly, that calm reason left no doubt as to its truth, especially as he had seen that crushed body, incapable of action, a mangled heap of mortal debris; and yet he must have created that mortality with his own thinking, otherwise it could not have so expressed.

So all material manifestations, he reasoned, must first be thoughts in mind before expression is possible, and the more refined the thought, the more refined the expression. Then the law of life there, as here, was thinking into existence.

THE LAW must be, “AS YOU THINK, SO YOU ARE,” but he found this inner and higher part of himself saying, Rather you can objectify things by thinking only when the point of actual conviction of its being so is reached; otherwise, if all thoughts were manifested, mortal humanity would destroy itself, because the morbid tendency of mortality is constantly to think destructive thoughts.

John reasoned further, “If mortal man has no power and no ability to think, whence then come these mortal thoughts?” And clear as a bell filling the whole forest as well as his whole mind came the answer.
