The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | NOVEMBER 1934

with them.” And she bears her loss with marvelous grit, gladdened by the vision of her son going on from glory to glory “white with Jesus’ purity, tranquil with His peace and glad with His joy.”

“Thou Art Ever With Me”

A woman lies dying. She is struggling for breath and showing signs of deep distress, mental as well as physical. Softly but confidently I repeat three favorite hymns that picture the Lord Jesus in all His steadfastness.

“How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear!
It soothes our sorrows, heals our wounds,
And drives away our fear.”

“Jesus, the very thought of Thee
With sweetness fills the breast,
But sweeter far Thy Face to see
And in Thy presence rest.”

“The soul that to Jesus hath fled for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to his foes;
That soul, though all hell shall endeavor to shake,
I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”

The breathing grows quieter. Peace comes to the face. With a tired little sigh the woman goes into the larger life to see, face to face, Him whose picture had brought her comfort and courage.

Face to Face

A little group of friends kneel before the Altar, early one Sunday, at Holy Communion. I knew their needs, and I knew that they had come to the Altar to keep tryst with the Lord whose picture was in their hearts, the Bread of God who had come down from Heaven to give life to the world. A man and his wife kneel with our group, the man flagged with a serious crime, but the shadow of the penitentiary loomed up to darken the two lives. A woman kneels with us who has just received a telegram saying her son-in-law was entrapped in a submarine that was lost under the sea. A woman kneels with us whose disease has been pronounced incurable by medical science. And I kneel with them with all their sorrows on my heart. But we all leave the Altar rail “strengthened with the Bread of Life.” There we had seen our Lord, face to face, and looking, longing, loving, we had grown more like Him in courage and peace.
