SPIRIT works such marvels. Here is the story: I have a neighbor—deaf and almost blind—who has always been a great pest in several ways, but mostly by quarreling so noisily with her husband it has really been quite a menace to our listening children. He is nearly as bad. But, anyhow, I sat one day trying my best to meditate, and one of the usual noisy quarrels started; so I turned my meditation on them full blast—but nothing apparently happened.

Then I put them and their home on my regular noon-day list (in accordance with instructions in The Call to Service). This was perhaps six months ago. Today she came over for a little while, which she rarely does, and mentioned casually that they almost never quarrel any more, and that he is so thoughtful of her that when they go places he even takes hold of her arm and asks her if she can see all right now.

It did not occur to me until an hour or so later why she came over, and then with a flash of illumination that brought me to my feet with a joyous “Thank you, Father!”

It is marvelous how the ones I work for at the noonday hour almost always thank me in one way or another unwittingly. Perhaps it was because I was working for President Roosevelt that I had so little trouble getting my Home Loan through.
