by a very great Sadhu, Jesus Christ; the way of meeting and facing every plain duty confronting one, and not by running away from any of them, even to gain spiritual salvation.

Not that the pupils of the real Sadhus realized that they were shunning life and its duties; for in India one of the highest ideals ingrained into the minds of the people was that of becoming a saint, and they had been taught to aid all who were seeking to follow that purpose in every way they could.

However, the fact remains that the ideals of the people of India and of America are very different, and the difference is caused by the teachings of and the life pictured to American minds by Jesus Christ. What is that difference? It is the difference between making the mind and its powers supreme; and teaching, developing, disciplining and subordinating the mind to the soul and to Divine Love, its Lord and Master.

In India pupils and disciples are taught to seek until they find their Master in some other outer or inner being, and whom they accept as their spiritual Teacher, to whom they give all their worship and obedience, and who is supposed to lead them to salvation; salvation usually meaning to them freedom from the forces of the body and the outer world, so that they can leave their bodies at will; can be superior to and able to control all material forces; can live as long as they like; can control the minds of individual and crowds, if need be—all of which are indicated in the article mentioned; but all purely an exhibition of great mental powers.

Christ Jesus had all these powers; but He had something else, something far more important to the world and to all He contacted,—He had and He still has the power of healing and changing their lives with a look or a touch; of changing the thought of the whole world by His teaching and by His life; the essence of His teaching being that the Christ within, or the Holy Spirit of God, is in every man, is the Light which lighteth him and his very life; and that by allowing that Spirit to lead and light his way, all things that He did and even greater may man can do. No man therefore need go to any priest or teacher or master to gain powers He had, but only to “seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all things else would be added.”
