NOW WE call your attention to the final and chief phase of the subject and the one mainly responsible for this article. You have probably wondered just what is the distinction and relation between the soul and the human mind, as we have used these terms. We will try to make this plain for your future clear understanding of what is to follow in later articles.

The soul is the real man, he who gives life, intelligence and purpose to man’s existence in the outer world in a human body. He takes on a body solely for experience or to learn the lessons which physical life alone can teach. For the soul has evolved its consciousness up through the lower kingdoms of earth and is still largely enmeshed in its animal consciousness, but is ever trying to free itself so it may partake of the consciousness and life of the inner spiritual nature which it constantly feels pressing from within, seeking to come forth.

In other words, the soul finds that only in a human body can it learn the truth of that inner nature, by discovering what the outer nature is not, and what it can not bring—harmony, happiness and peace of mind. For the mind is but the outer expression of the soul’s consciousness, bound and held in a physical brain and influenced always by its old animal tendencies ever seeking to drag and keep the consciousness down to their level.

Through the stuggle of striving to free itself in body after body, the consciousness—the soul—inspired by the spirit within, gradually gains the strength and qualities of spirit that finally lifts its consciousness away from the animal, away from the human, into that higher and inner realm where the Spirit, the One Consciousness, rules eternally,
