The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | APRIL 1935

Self must have interfered in Turkey, for I had to come home and do some work on self. Then I closed my eyes, when lo! I saw Jesus talking to these Turkish souls. The White One and I were standing off apart from them, but I could hear His Words. “Why,” I said, “that sounds like the Sermon on the Mount.” I tried, in shame to remember the Sermon and could not. The White One held my hand close, and then the word LOVE came to me. The same Love, the same Sermon, and the same Jesus, after all these years.

These are not His exact words but are only what I understood. I did not listen very well there or anywhere; it did not seem to be necessary for me to listen. I was thinking of other things.

Why did He not occupy all of me? I wondered. Then I knew that He could use only the part of me that was Christ; the other half was not Christ, but self. Then I saw self as a shadow—the outermost part of me, and His Light shining within and all around me.

I wondered why these souls had to be told that the Master was coming; I had known it for some time. I wondered what religion
