THE INNER SIGHT

ONE NIGHT an angel came to me,
And touched my eyes that I might see
With vision beauteous and profound
The true soul-world that lies around.

When morning came with rainy skies,
I saw it through my perfect eyes;
And lo! the sun was shining bright,
Filling my room with golden light!

I walked so gladly down the street
That wings seemed fastened to my feet;
The world to me was born anew,
And roses in the gutters grew.

All faces beamed on me with love,
Like angels from the heights above;
For in each one I clearly saw
The working of celestial law.

I thanked God for the beauty given,
And said “This is not earth, but Heaven!
All is designed in perfect plan;
Christ lives again in every man.”

And then there came to me these words,
Borne as by voices of sweet birds;
“Only the pure of heart can see
The Christ in all His purity.”

We need not wish with our psychic eyes
For visions search the starry skies,
Nor wait for angels to appear,
Since angels live in all down here.

So when we gain the perfect sight,
And walk in God’s unblemished light,
We’ll not seek Heaven far away,
But find it round us every day!
