The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | JULY 1934

It would be well for you to watch out for that girl, for there are evidently qualities in her that later will appear to be what you were shown. Are you sure such qualities are not in yourself?

ONE OF the members of our group during meditation saw the following vision. She was shown a small piece of white thread hanging in a vertical position in the air; the thread then slowly started to wind, commencing at the bottom and winding upward out of sight. None of us understood the meaning. Will you kindly let us know its interpretation?

The white thread hanging in the air was undoubtedly a symbol of the thread of consciousness that connects us with Spirit. Those who perceive and recognize it and connect themselves with it will be drawn up with it into the Spirit, but they will have to make the conscious connection and steadfastly hold to it or they will be left behind.

Can you not see the truth of this? It is a perfect illustration of what we have previously written you—that those who are half-hearted in your group and who fail to make themselves live the truths they are learning, the thread or the opportunity given them will be withdrawn and they will be left to wander in the darkness where self leads them.

FOR SOME reason another woman and I were to be dissected or cut up, either because of an accident from which death was certain to result, or for some other cause. We were lying in a long room with one woman attendant. Our bodies were slowly being drawn to the far end of the room. There was no pain, yet we were conscious of all that was being done. I asked the attendant how it was possible for us to retain consciousness under such circumstances. She replied it was because the vertebrae of our spinal columns had not been severed.

We realized that the time was short and I asked to send a message to my three children—that they should at no time do anything of which their mother would not approve. It looked as if it was time for the surgeon to begin and I seemed to rejoice over the fact that I was soon to be freed from my earthly body and could thus be a spiritual being, when—like a flash I awakened.

Your dream is most interesting. Of course you realize that it was symbolic and was given you as a teaching to show you that your real self is not your body—that what you consider to be your body is merely that mental picture you saw being cut up and of course your conscious not being in it you felt no pain. If you only know it, you can consciously lift your mind away from your physical body anytime you will, for your mind is where its attention or interest are centered. So that if you could fix your mind on something interesting that was entirely apart from your body, you could be completely free from it and therefore would be unconscious of any pain that had been felt a moment before. Perhaps you were given this experience to show you the unreality of that body you think is yours, in order to help you to free yourself the next time you feel pain.
