The Inner Life

THE HERALD OF THE NEW AGE | APRIL 1936

THE OVERCOMING POWER OF CHRIST

I HAD dream last night; I dreamed I was seated in a great Cathedral. Although I was not of the Catholic faith I felt they would let me sit in prayer. The altar was aglow in which they said that the Catholic Church was compelled to go through the altar. There seemed to be a door in it and I walked through this door. And then I was in the midst of a most vivid scene.

I was standing on a winding road near the sea. It was night and very stormy. I seemed so very tired and I fell on the road. A young monk in a black robe ran to me and gathered me in his arms. His face was fille with passion and as he stooped to kiss me I cried out: “Have pity on me; can you not see I am pure?” As I said these words my face and figure shone forth with a great light (as Jesus in His transfiguration). The power of the light was so great that the young man was almost blinded by it. And at once his passion was converted into Love.

He said to me, “I will be punished for disobeying them, but I will do my penance and then when our work is finished we will be united forever.” He then handed me a black robe. I put it on and we traveled the narrow road for a short way and then our paths separated. He turned to the left and I to the right.

I had a great sorrow for him, for his way was harder than mine, although my road was terribly rough. I came to a great cliff; it had only ten spikes to descend into a small sandy bay. I said to myself, “Surely I can never make it down there,” and asked the black-robed ones nearby to help me. But they all said I could do it and for me to go on.

I finally reached the bottom and there I was in the midst of women, who were the women of corrupted priests. It seemed that I was to be one of these women; but somehow I knew I would never be hurt or touched as I had discovered the great power within. I thought to myself: “This would not be so bad; these poor souls need me and here I shall work.”

Your dream was very significant in that it proved that you are now aware of the Christ Power within you and can call upon It whenever there is a need. Therefore, remember to use it when any doubt or wrong belief intrudes itself in your mind. All the pasted trouble in the church, at the Altar, meeting the young monk, his passion turned into Love by the Christ in you, and your pity for him,—were the remnants of past conditions in former lives through which you had worked your way. Eventually your consciousness will be entirely from any tendency to attract those old forces, and when they are no longer recognized and fed, they will die of inanition and no longer appear before you even in dreams.
