Man is a self conscious being. He is conscious not only of himself, but of his relation to other selves about him. He is also conscious of many other things seemingly outside of him, as well as of many states or conditions within himself, both within his body—seemingly—and within his mind.

In other words he is consciousness itself—that is, he is a center of consciousness; for everywhere about him there are other conscious minds—in fact he seems to be immersed in a great world of Mind, everything in the physical being centers or channels of expression of that Mind.

But man is a conscious center of that Mind, while inanimate things, rocks, minerals, vegetation and animals are not conscious of being such centers. They are centers or mediums of Mind’s expression, but they have nothing to do with such expression other than to serve as channels—each in its different stages of consciousness—for such phases of Mind’s expression as is possible with their individual limitations.

Man being a conscious center of that Mind has then the possibility of being a conscious cooperator with that Mind, and when he begins a study of that Mind of which he is a part, and learns what It wishes to express, and that as he co-operates with It harmony manifests in his life, he naturally more and more seeks to align himself with that Mind and Its will and to learn Its purpose for him.
